A Chat with Wim Hof The Iceman, Poke Bowl Mania, Thrive Market, and the Give Back Box Program

[ad_1]

The Way of The Iceman by Wim Hof now available from Dragon Door in paperbackJust a few weeks ago, I clicked a couple buttons on Skype and interviewed the one and only Wim Hof–The Iceman for Dragon Door. After only about two rings, here he was, smiling and waving from the other side of the Atlantic.  I hope that the enthusiasm in his answers comes through in the printed version for you. Wim is the genuine article, and as Scott Carney had said in his interview and in his book, it’s Wim’s rustic, imperfect nature that makes him that much more real. Wim is an adventurer, not a guru. And that’s awesome.

I’m still not sure I’d do many of the feats mentioned in the book, but no matter how you feel about climbing Mt. Everest wearing just shorts, the breathing exercises and cold showers can benefit just about anyone. Wim continues to participate in scientific studies as well, and he hints at upcoming research in the interview as well.  I wold absolutely encourage you to go check it out along with his Dragon Door title, The Way of The Iceman which is now out in paperback.

Speaking of frozen things…

Austin Adventures with the SCC and HKC – Plus a Workout and Mobility Stuff!

[ad_1]

Ever have one of those trips where you come back and you know you’ve changed in some way? This was definitely one of those!  And I mean that in a good way.  There was no shortage of adventure and excitement this past weekend in Austin, Texas.  In fact for one of the more action packed parts, I am only half-joking about exaggerating it a little and writing it up as a screenplay… I’ve already cast Danny Trejo as one of the villains.  Long story short, we are unstoppable.

Tao Health and Fitness, SCC, HKC Austin Instructors and Host

Back to the SCC and HKC… I led the SCC on Saturday, and Senior RKC Paul Britt led the HKC on Sunday.  The folks that showed up to each workshop (and some showed up for both) were extremely impressive not only with their physical abilities, but with their professionalism, experience, and understanding of the human condition.

The "Half and Half" Kettlebell Workout

[ad_1]

I have a real love of heavy single kettlebell swings, especially in sets of 10. That rep range really lets me focus on the form and generate as much power as I can, then the set ends before anything has the chance to get weird. For this reason I really love this rep range for advanced beginners or even intermediate folks for regular swings, they don’t have time to let a bad habit sneak in, and plenty of great quality reps get in their memory banks. So, if the kettlebells are properly chosen there’s plenty of opportunity to get some near maximal moments in this simple workout. Especially when going for 10 rounds….  That being said, when I did this with a workout partner, I brought out a selection of kettlebells in case we wanted to swap heavier or lighter.  So, in addition to the 32kg kettlebell and pair of 16kg kettlebells mentioned in the example workout, I had a 24kg and a pair of 12kg, a 20kg, and a pair of 10kg. Yes, I have quite the collection… I now have enough kettlebells to open my own gym, or lead a pretty decent sized group class of men and women of various fitness levels… (yes, that’s foreshadowing…)

The Half N Half Kettlebell Workout

Other things to consider when choosing your kettlebells for this workout: if you go lighter, then really focus on your skills, making every rep super perfect while minimizing rest/breaks.

Interview Extravaganza!

[ad_1]

Once again, a terrible leave of abscence… I hope that none of you have had the flu this season but I got hit by a real hum-dinger of one.  I had just returned home from a fantastic adventure that I wanted to tell you all about, but quickly had to put that on hold as I only had the energy to do the most basic of work stuff (to you know, keep the lights on and the rent paid).  The good news is, I was still able to complete a couple of really fun interviews for Dragon Door and have saved notes from all the stuff I didn’t have a chance to write up for you yet (including some super fun workouts).

YES! Neuro-Grips are BACK!!

[ad_1]

Neuro-Grips are FINALLY back in stock, honestly, I was pretty bummed out that they were not available for Christmas gift giving.  But they are back now! Ever since I first tried the rough prototypes (one was even slightly not level) back in 2013 or so, I’ve used them in my training.  And yes, if you go to the Neuro-Grips page you’ll see someone very familar in the demo photos. 🙂

A Mind Bender Workout for Cardio, Strength, Power, and Grit

[ad_1]

So, I have a weird habit of taking on (or creating) a smaller project to break up a larger project. It means I basically do "work" as a "break" and is part of the reason I get a lot of various things done in a small amount of time. Many years ago I discovered that I don’t so much need or want a "break", it’s more that I need a change of subject. A mental flavor changer…* One such project I have right now is for a friend who is very gifted with the tough love and real world motivation. This project has had a very welcome side effect of being very motivating.

Real workouts ain't purty. That’s right, folks, workout photos aren’t always pretty.

Now, I’m a self-starter, always have been, but we can all use some help. This has inspired me to get a little more organized. At the same time I’d been listening to James Altucher’s The Choose Yourself Guide to Wealth on Audible (here’s a free trial and two free audiobooks)… so it all kind of converged over the holiday weekend. I like that book because it seems to support some of my odd behaviors and life choices. That’s nice for a change.

Anyway, after eating not one but TWO slices of my friend’s gluten free (but not free of anything else) delicious peanut butter pie on Christmas, along with a whole lot of leg of lamb and smoked turkey, I really felt like I needed to get out and put those calories to work the next day.  I also wanted to mess with my own head.

Competitive Circuit Workout for Monkey Bars, Bodyweight Exercise, and Sprints

[ad_1]

I’ve enjoyed variations of this little combo for a couple of years, it’s always a lot of fun and can even feel a little bit like a game.  Most recently a friend and I did the workout for 10 rounds followed by a more focused strength workout.  If you have a group, you can even perform this as an interesting relay race.  No matter how many rounds you choose, be sure to record the amount of time so that you can see how you improve the next time you give it another try.

Last Second Cyber Monday Gift Set Advice!

[ad_1]

Noticed that some of you are putting together some very smart combinations of kettlebells, but not everyone may understand the same gift-giving logic.

If you’re in the continental US, then now is the time to take advantage of Dragon Door‘s sale – it’s ending tomorrow at noon central (11/29/16 1PM Eastern). As many of us already know, the cost of shipping a heavy kettlebell or a couple of reasonable sized ones can add up VERY quickly… and the shipping on the large, sturdy and totally worth it freestanding pull-up bar is nothing to ignore. It’s heavy and it’s oversized.

So! A little last minute, but if you need help putting together what literally could be the package deal gift for someone who’s interested in getting serious about their strength, I’ve prepared a little guide for you.  Please note that the gift "kit" recommendations are my opinions, but that they’re based on a lot of experience with the products, ideas, and modalities of RKC, RKC-II, PCC for the past several years training and coaching.

First off! The classic venerable "Which Dragon Door kettlebell do I buy?" chart :
